SMS not arriving? What to check in a public inbox

You have copied a number, requested a text, and opened its inbox—but the message is not there. Start by checking the exact receiving number and the page’s connection status. An empty inbox alone cannot tell you whether the sender has sent a message or why delivery has not happened.

This checklist focuses on reading the correct FreeUSSMS inbox and checking its connection. If your question is whether a website accepts your number type at all, start with why a virtual number may not receive verification SMS. To compare number types before choosing one, read VoIP versus mobile numbers for SMS verification.

1. Check the complete receiving number

Compare the number on the sending service with the number at the top of your FreeUSSMS inbox. Our US numbers include the country code +1. If the sending form has a separate country selector, choose United States and follow that form’s format; avoid adding the country code twice.

The large number at the top of an inbox is the receiving number. A number or name above an individual message identifies its sender. They are different parts of the conversation.

2. Check whether the inbox is connected

Keep the inbox open and look at its status. New messages appear automatically when the connection is working. If the page says it is checking availability or reconnecting, wait for the live connection to recover before treating the visible message list as current. Reload the page once if it stays disconnected.

Open the current number directory if the inbox says the number is no longer available. A saved shortcut does not reserve a number or keep it online. If you choose another number, update the receiving number in the sending service too.

3. Make sure you are reading the right messages

Find the exact receiving number in the number directory and select Open inbox. Check the sender and arrival time of each text. Use Older messages for previous entries, or Back to latest to return to the newest messages.

In the directory, “With messages” and “Recent activity” can help you find inboxes with previous activity. A message count is not a delivery guarantee or proof that your particular sending service accepts the number.

4. Check the sending service before retrying

Look for an error, a resend countdown, or a restriction on the sending website. Follow its instructions instead of repeatedly requesting texts. Some services do not accept shared or temporary numbers. FreeUSSMS cannot override that decision, and changing inboxes does not guarantee acceptance.

If several codes eventually arrive, follow the sender’s instructions about which code is valid. Never use a message meant for another visitor.

When to use your own number

For personal accounts, recovery codes or anything you need to keep access to, use a number you control. FreeUSSMS inboxes are public and numbers can change. Read how public and private numbers differ, or follow our getting-started guide for a walkthrough.
